Holiday Wine Guide
It is finally that time of the year. The holidays are getting really close and I am sure that a lot of you are already shopping for gifts and stocking up for lunches and dinners of this last part of 2018. I know Stephane has already posted different interesting recipes to make sure you have ideas for your table, so I thought it could be interesting to write an article to help you with the wine. In this article we will learn a few useful tips and tricks to select and serve wines for the holiday celebrations.
- Start with a glass of Champagne
First of all when it is time to celebrate I think that there is nothing better than a bottle of Champagne. Opening the bottle really has a sense of joy and celebration in itself, but on top of that I think that the crispiness of the wine really prepares our taste buds for the meal that we are about to take part to. If you are wondering why and how Champagne has bubbles, you really should take a look at our article on Introduction to Champagne and if you do not find the answer to your questions there, stay tuned, because next week we will be talking a bit more in details about the different styles of Sparkling wines.
- Tempt with a Light Aperitif
Now that everyone has taken a sip and toasted to the host, we are ready to tempt them with light aperitif. This is very typical French and Italian and I honestly think it is a wonderful habit. Why not get ready to lunch or dinner with some light snacks? The key element to keep in mind is the word “light”. The food served should really just be a starter to give everyone a chance to chat and relax. This is the introduction to our meal. It can be served at the table, but I prefer to do it standing up to give everyone an opportunity to mingle walking around and chat. A great and simple idea, if you do not know what to choose, is to have a tray of cheeses. If you decide to pair a wine with them you might find some useful hints in our Wine and Cheese Pairing Guide. There are many more ideas on Stephane’s youtube channel.
- Choose the Right Temperature
Once the aperitif is over we are all finally ready to move to the table. I personally would like to recommend to have smaller portions and more courses, but there are no written rules so go with what you like the most. If you are not sure about what wine to choose, I would highly recommend to read our Wine and Food Pairing Guide as well as our Introduction to Dessert Wines. Regardless of what you are serving do not forget to choose the right serving temperature for your wine. It might seem difficult, but we can help you with this simple article: Wine Serving Temperature.
- Save Leftovers
Once the dinner or lunch is over do not waste leftover wine if there is any. If you would like to learn a bit more on how to preserve an open wine, we have the right article for you: How to Store an Opened Wine.
- Be Adventurous
The last tip that I would like to give everyone is probably the most important. Wine is not a destination, it is a journey, so do not focus too much on finding the perfect bottle, but enjoy exploring. I love taking recommendations when I shop in wine store or when I order from a menu list. It is always nice to try new wines that we would normally not choose. Every bottle is like a new adventure that is waiting to be uncorked, so regardless of what style you like, my last tip is, be adventurous and try something new. It is the best way to discover a new hidden treasure. At the end of the day it is just a glass of wine, so have fun with it.
Santé and Happy Holidays!
